Biography

How It All Began

Severed Angel is a metal band from the Northeastern United States (NY and MD) forged to unleash a sonic assault of melodic heavy metal upon the masses.

In 2018, drummer Wayne Noon started The Rat Salad Review Podcast to promote his favorite artists and bands, and (above all) have fun with a podcast that provides insight to artists that are not promoted by the mainstream music press. Some of those bands included Timeless Haunt (PA), The Nightmare Stage (NY), Infinite Spectrum (NY), Taz (MD/DC), Immortally Committed (NY), and Tension Rising (NY).

As the original drummer for Phoenix Reign, a NYC-based power metal band, they released an album called “Destination Unknown” and toured around the tri-state area. Their final show was at the Gramercy Theater in NYC opening for international recording artists Epica.

In 2019, guitarist Lou Mavs started his podcast (The Music Is Life Podcast) discussing his opinions and experience as a musician. Wayne and Lou were friends from the time Phoenix Reign was playing shows in Lou’s native Queens, NY in the early 2000s. Wayne asked Lou if he would join The Rat Salad Review Podcast as a co-host, to which he did.

In late 2020, Wayne was preparing the release of his new band Project Resurrect. It was around that time that the music world suffered the loss of Edward Van Halen. Lou and Wayne suggested that they cover a Van Halen song as a tribute to Eddie, and enlisted the services of Timeless Haunt bassist George Dimitri and Thrash or Die/Combat vocalist Ralph Viera. The cover of “Atomic Punk” was released to positive responses. 2021 saw the release of Project Resurrect’s “False Reality” CD and Rat Salad Review & Friends’ “Cover Series, Part 1” EP.

In early 2022, Wayne suggested forming a new original band with Lou, George, The Nightmare Stage/Immortally Committed keyboardist Marc Muchnik, and Infinite Spectrum bassist/songwriter Alex Repetti (also of Tension Rising and Project S.E.A.R.). Lou provided an original demo written 12 years ago called “Dogs of War,” which was written as entrance music for his cousin - MMA fighter/US Army Ranger Robby Plotkin. Wayne thought the song was perfect for this new project. He then arranged a new version of it, to which Marc and Alex wrote lyrics, and Lou re-recorded his parts. Upon completion of the song, Severed Angel was officially born.

Within 3 months, they wrote their entire first album. After that was completed, Severed Angel started working on more material, which were all released as singles: “A Fate Worse Than Death,” “Run and Hyde,” “Bump In The Night,” and "Mt. Cyandie."

How It Is Going

The evolution of Severed Angel’s sound began as every band does - taking inspiration from their influences (bands ranging from Soilwork, Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Unearth, Iron Maiden, and In Flames to artists such as Peter Gabriel, Steve Moore of Zombi, and Dead Can Dance). With every album, critics were unsure how to label the band’s music. Is it Thrash Metal? Is it Power Metal? Is it Progressive Metal?

The band admits its music is Progressive in nature - they never want to release the same album twice, and consciously make every effort to push their skillsets further without sacrificing melody or substance. Severed Angel looks at every album as an evolution of the previous one. They are not against writing epic tracks such as “With Wings Anew” and “Citipati,” nor are they against writing songs like “Skyward” which may remind some of 90s alternative band The Gin Blossoms or “Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing” which may remind listeners of 80s synth pop with metal guitars. If it is good enough for Severed Angel, it is good enough to be released on their records.

One thing that the band consciously did to separate themselves lyrically from other bands was to focus on self-empowerment and self-awareness. In a time when morale was low due to the nation coming back to a state of normality after a 2-year lockdown, Severed Angel focused on writing music and lyrics that did not talk down to or black-pill the audience. This theme is explored and expanded on the more they wrote new material.

As the band continued to write more, they began noticing that the songs they were writing felt more like album cuts than singles. As a result, they started working on a follow up album right away, from which ten songs were produced and released as the second full-length album “Skyward” in 2024. Radio promotion for the album was handled by Munsey Ricci and Chelsea Nelson-Fernandez of Skateboard Marketing, and the album made progress for the band by charting in the Top 7 for Metal Contraband (weekly radio Loud Rock charts) and NACC Heavy Top 25 (charts for specialty community and college radio). The band was doing press for the album by speaking with many radio shows and podcasts around the country, and also found promotion for the album in international markets, including many respectable European metal magazines.

The success of “Skyward” brought many opportunities for Severed Angel, including their release of a covers EP where the band paid tribute to two of their favorite British bands - Paradise Lost and Def Leppard. In honor of 30 years of “Draconian Times” and 40 years of “Pyromania,” the band released their ”Enchantment/Too Late For Love” EP, which received high praise from fans and the press. Seeing that the band was running independently and successfully with an in-house built paradigm (filming and editing their own music videos, their approach to writing, recording, mixing and mastering their music, running their social media pages and website), NoLifeTilMetal Records (a subsidiary of Roxx Records) discussed signing Severed Angel for worldwide distribution. An agreement was made, and Severed Angel (through NoLifeTilMetal Records) released their third album “When Eternity Ends” on March 28th, 2025. The album was considered one of the 40 best Metal releases of 2025 by many podcasters and influencers alongside new releases from Dream Theater and Helloween.

Severed Angel released 3 cover singles in 2025 as well - their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Into The Void” (paying tribute to Ozzy Osbourne who passed away in July 2025), Stryper’s “Soldiers Under Command” (which was also released as a bonus track on Roxx Records’ 40th Anniversary Tribute for “To Hell With The Devil”), and “Clones (We’re All) from Alice Cooper’s “blackout” period. The band took the liberty of arranging the song to also feature motifs from what was shaping to be their most anticipated and ambitious release…

“The Cost Of Creation” is a concept album of one man’s mission to resurrect the memories of passed family members via artificial intelligence and to replicate human emotion. It will be released in the Summer of 2026 on NoLifeTilMetal Records. A full-length animated feature film will be released in tandem with the album. A founding member and co-principal songwriter for DC/Baltimore metal legends TAZ and Stormspell Records Recording artist Timeless Haunt, George has been playing bass in bands since the glory days of heavy metal in the 1980s. He has played hundreds of gigs all over, including sharing the stage with Christian metal legends Stryper, hard rock pioneers UFO, and metal gods The Three Tremors.

Through Timeless Haunt, George was a regular interviewee on Wayne Noon’s Rat Salad Review Podcast. This led to a friendship that evolved into George participating on most of the Rat Salad Review & Friends’ Cover Series. Discussions about doing original music led to the genesis of Severed Angel.

George is a featured Conklin Guitars artist and exclusively plays Conklin GT-7 extended range basses, Ampeg and Hartke Amplification, and has a slew of pedals accumulated over an almost 40-year music career.

Marc Muchnik

Keyboards

Marc is a classically trained pianist and is a co-founder of the bands The Nightmare Stage and Mourning Hour. Marc is also a member of the band Immortally Committed. Wayne met Marc through his father in-law, telling him about a guy in the school he works at that listens to heavy metal. Marc handed Wayne’s father in-law one of their CDs, and Marc would come on Wayne’s Rat Salad Review podcast to talk about it. Marc would even join on a few episodes from time to time.

With his bands on hold at the moment, Marc messaged Wayne to see if he was working on any new music. Wayne told him about a new band in the works that would become Severed Angel, and Marc was eager to get started.

Not only is Marc a musician but he is a school psychologist who works with young children. He is also a co-author of the plant based cookbook "HarmonEAyT" with his wife Lisa (author of "Rainbow Panda"), as well as a certified yoga instructor.

drums

Wayne started playing drums around 10 years old. Self-taught and Influenced early on by bands like Def Leppard and Led Zeppelin, he would soon get into heavier bands like Metallica and Megadeth. A friend then turned him on to Helloween, and Wayne adapted his drumming to a more European style of Power Metal.

Wayne brought that style into his first real band in 1998 called Phoenix Reign. They would release one full length album entitled “Destination Unknown.” Wayne decided to leave the band after their biggest show opening for Epica to a sold out crowd at the Gramercy Theater in NYC in 2010.

In 2015, Wayne wanted to get a new band going, but found it hard to keep people interested. He decided to just make a 2-man band with his friend Pete Rigopoulos, which would turn into Project Resurrect. Their debut album “False Reality” was released in 2021. Stan Ev, a friend and musician from Brooklyn, suggested Alex Repetti to mix the album.

With Project Resurrect filling a musical void, Wayne wanted to continue making music and started releasing cover songs with Lou Mavs and George Dimitri with various other musicians who have been part of Wayne’s Rat Salad Review podcast.

Out of those cover songs, Severed Angel was born. Wayne wanted to work on original music with Lou and George. Marc and Alex were added, and the rest is history.
